I always appreciate you reminding us about the importance of feelings, spontaneity, and how these relate to more wisdom oriented stance. I recently consulted with an eminent psychiatrist, and when I told him that I wept in a session with a client, he almost scolded me. Even when I explained that my vulnerable feelings shared allowed the client to drop her defenses and share her real feelings with me. It apparently was considered inappropriate. I’m not gonna give up my humanity in serving my clients. And I’m also not going to indulge my feelings if it’s not in service to their needs. However, I do not believe that being a blank screen is helpful for many people who have suffered trauma. They need to know that they matter to us.

I like what my Dzogchen teacher said: working together, student and teacher find a way. We're just humans. Some of us have some skills and the discernment to use them for the benefit of others. No need to get fancier than that.

I just heard some really terrible news today, when I read that pain is like richly layered wines, they are flavors on God’s tongue. And also orienting my attitude to “come what may” than to withdrawing or disengaging emotionally, has really help as well. This has helped me find equanimity in this situation, instead of spiraling, like I usually do. Thank you!
